Adelaide Trip

19/01/2010 9:38am
Michael and I recently went away on a road trip to Adelaide, with the primary aim being to see Drew and Jenn wed. Aside from that part of the trip we had some adventures of our own in the 40+ degree heat. Day one of our travels saw us tag team driving from Warrnambool to Adelaide with a stop at Kingston to meet the Big lobster and Hahndorf to pick strawberries at Beerenberg. While in Hahndorf we shared some awesome iced chocolates and found some goats curd to buy. I also found that my ancestors might have been one of the first families to settle in Hahndorf- pretty cool.

The next day was the wedding, needless to say we didn't want to waste time so before the wedding we made our way to Semaphore to check it out then to the seahorse (hippocampus) farm in Port Adelaide. The seahorses were pretty cool but the best thing was patting a shark! Ok so it was only a dog shark but touching a shark none the less is still cool. We didn't leave much time between leaving Port Adelaide and the Wedding so we had a frantic dash to get changed in the car from beach wear to wedding formality.

By the third day we were pretty tuckered out and the heat was a killer that we wasted most of the day in the swimming pool on the hotel roof. By five o'clock we decided to adventure out and we sought out the local cinema, which just happened to be the biggest screen in South Australia, we saw Sherlock Holmes. One unusual thing about this cinema was that it was licensed so they had beer and nibbles combos.

Which brings me to the fourth day- Barossa Valley. With the aid of Kirk and Jess we enjoyed a day trip along the Barossa Valley highway. The first stop was Penfolds, which offered the best wines of the day. After this we dined at Maggie Beer's farm shop (of 'The Cook and The Chef') which included lots of tastings and a sneek peek into the studio where the show is filmed. We even managed to get a glimpse of Maggie while we ate our ploughman style lunch. These were both in Nuriootpa. From here we moved on to Angaston were Saltram wine estate was a bit of a let down but the Barossa Valley cheese company made up for it with its smelly cheese. Down the road a bit was Tanunda were we enjoyed some home made ice-cream the specialty was a wine flavour. Our last stop much to the relief of Kirk was the Jacob's Creek visitor centre. After another hot day we all took a dip in the pool.

The final day of our travels was our trip back; the only day under 40 degrees Celsius and it was raining most of the way.

Each day we stayed in Adelaide we enjoyed a buffet breakfast courtesy of $1 summer stunner deal at Stamford Plaza. This was a real highlight as would be expected, the only problem is what to choose and how to limit ones self.

Graduation

17/12/2009 7:18am
On the 15th of December, after four years of study I finally graduated. Bachelor of Science (Chemistry) and a Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary). After 90 min of traditional ceremony Nevin, Ivy, Nick, Matt and I were the last ones of the night to get our degrees. The hoods we wore were two shades of green - Malachite for education and Olivine for science.

Nerd Stuff

So today something very cool happenned. A while ago I wrote a patch to add support for the remote control for my tv card in linux. Today I noticed that the patch had been included in the mainline kernel by Mr. Linus Torvalds himself. A screenshot is included below. To find it yourself go to kernel.org. click mainline gitweb, drivers, media, video, saa7134, saa7134-cards.c history and then commitdiff to see my patch. Not very exciting but I think it's cool that I've now contributed to open source and linux and anyone in the world with a dtv-1000s will now be able to use the remote control in mythtv etc...

Come fly with me, lets fly, lets fly away...

28/11/2009 8:07am
Here are some photos that I have put up of me flying in a tiger moth. This was my 21st birthday present from my sister and her boyfriend. It was a lot of fun, we did loops and barrel rolls and more. The flight was at Torquay so the view was great as well.

Summer Fruit

28/11/2009 7:12am
My favourite thing about summer is the fruit- the stone fruits are awesome, but the thing I look forward to the most is berry picking. This is something Michael and I have enjoyed doing for the past two year and will probably continue to do. These have included picking strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, boysenberries, loganberries, marionberries, youngberries, silvenberries, gooseberries, and red currents.
A couple of good places to go for these are Pennyroyal Raspberry Farm, Gentle Annie Berry Gardens which is a bit more commercial and you will probably pay more than at other places, Shoebridge Blueberry Farm, Irrewarra Gourmet Strawberry Farm for the best strawberries at the best price.
We have made smoothes, cupcakes, and other desserts plus they are great just to eat on their own, not that everyone do not already know that.
