SRCS

Purely because most people I know never got to see where I worked during uni I want to share some photos with you. This is the science room I ran at Sydney Road Community School as you can see it was quite small and jam pack. A fun and friendly place to work for the most part. Below is a picture of my fish which did not survive well in the lab- all of which are named after famous scientist which the students struggled to pronounce and would then rename 'rainbow'.

The Windsor Hotel - High Tea

28/11/2009 6:00am

Today Michael and I enjoyed a rare treat. We shared a selection of scones, savoury items, ribbon sandwiches, cakes (way to many to try them all), mini desserts, a chocolate fountain, sparkling wine, tea and coffee. Some of the mini desserts included creme brulee, panacotta, vanilla slice, creme caramel, lemon tart, and so many more then I can remember- it was heart breaking not being able to try them all but there is only so much food one person can eat and as I write this is still have a mild stomach ache. There was also ice-creams and crepes but we could not stomach these. The place was so nice to eat in and the service was awesome- a little too helpful you could never get to the bottom of your cup so would continue to drink. After we had been there a while we had a quick look around and went to the powder room as they prefer to call it. It was easily the nicest toilets I have ever been in there was even a sitting area with couches to do your make-up.

It is the end of an era. Today I completed my last university chemistry experiment ever. After having had my science practicals assessed for 10 years now (since year seven) I finally come to the end. I am now at the turning point when I move from student who submits work to supervisor/ demonstrator/ marker. I would like to offer thanks to the following people who got me through all of these practicals at university:

Greg Ellis (Organic chem. Lab Tech)

Alf Meilak (Physical chem. Lab Tech)

All the helpful demonstrators and especially the awesome ones who were happy to muck around and chat while things were reacting/ boiling/ or any process that took far too long to stay awake for.

The following lectures that offered assistance from one time or another:

Uta Wille, Spencer Williams, Craig Hutton, Muthupandian Ashokkumar, Evan Bieske, Trevor Smith, Jonathan White, Spas Kolev, Michelle Gee, Franz Grieser, Richard O'Hair, and Mark Rizzacasa.

And of course Michael my super assistant.

SUB cycling challenge

14/12/2008 5:02am

While I am on I probably should discuss the 'SUB Women's Cycling Challenge' that I competed in. I entered myself in a women's only cycling event to slightly make up for the fact that I did not do the GVBR this year which runs at the same time. Being a bit of a tool I decided that I would enter myself in the top level of the event (which is probably where my fitness was last year at this time not this year). So in the couple of weeks leading up the event I thought I better at least try and do some training to prepare myself to start at pole position. Unfortunately this also coincided with exam and placement time so training had to be preformed on the indoor trainer with my notes sitting on the handlebars. It is amazing how hard you can work yourself on a trainer- it improved my cadence as well. So after about two weeks of daily workout sessions to Bob Sinclair I thought I was about ready. So Saturday the 6th came around and I was all pumped to go, wearing my event jersey and number- 182. Michael and Nate rod down with me to the starting point. We started from St Kilda's Catani gardens and went around Albert Park then down beach road to Mordialloc and back to St Kilda. As expected the first half went great, I was keeping a great pace and remained in the top 40-50 people out of 700. I got to the rest stop at Mordialloc when there was still loads of bananas- a sign I was there early. Now the problem begins after this point. You see I had been training daily at home but I had only been doing a max of an hour a day... once I reached a bit past that hour point on the sub ride that's when I began to slow right down. Quite a few women began to catch up and over take me. With about 10 km's to go I finally regained my strength and in a second wind got to the finishing point. Michael said I came in roughly 92 with a time of 2hrs 10min, had I not take the rest stop like some people didn't my number would have been maybe 30 people lower. Oh well. By the end of the day I had road 75km. The next day Rob wanted to go cycling so I went for another 20 plus km ride on the velodrome still feeling the stain from the previous day. Over all it was lots of fun and worth any other women interested doing too.

Cafe Vue

14/12/2008 4:32am
I have been wanting to write about this for a while but kept forgetting so here it is a bit delayed but still delicious. Cafe Vue (a side business of the French restaurant Vue de monde) found on Little Collins street offers the best lunch in town. Known to those in the loop as the 'lunch box' quite simply it is a four-course meal in a red box. Each box contains a menu, wooden knives and forks, a starter, a soup or salad, a savoury main and a delectable sweet. Costing only 15 dollars it is a bargain because it fills you up leaving you feeling satisfied for the rest of the day. The menu changes one a month and I hope to get one a month just so I can see the surprise that awaits inside.

The first one we tried was October's menu:

Starter: Babaghnoush with cucumber fingers.

Soup: Vichyssoise

Savoury: Cafe Vue club sandwich

Sweet: Black forest gateau

The second was November's menu:

Starter: Pork rillettes with fennel seed crackers

Salad: Haricot blanc and chorizo salad

Savoury: Tuna nicoise roll

Sweet: Chocolate mousse with baked orange cream

I thought the first one was awesome, but Michael preferred the second. The nicoise roll at first look would seem like the most horrible thing- with a mixture of ingredients that couldn't possible work together, but they did and it was crazy good. It was like no roll I had ever had, shame it was gone so quickly. Now the only question that is left in my mind at the moment is should I go get Decembers lunch box without Michael or should I just wait till he gets back to Melbourne to start trying them again. I'm leaning towards the first idea... sorry Michael.
